Türkiye and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) have agreed a €400 million financing package to fund advanced biological wastewater treatment infrastructure. This initiative represents the first phase of a broader environmental investment programme designed to clean up the Sea of Marmara and prevent future outbreaks of marine mucilage, which severely disrupted the region's marine ecology in 2021.
The Sea of Marmara is bordered by Türkiye’s most heavily industrialised provinces, including Istanbul, Kocaeli, and Bursa. This region serves as the primary hub for the country’s plastics recycling and polymer processing industries. Because industrial discharge has historically contributed to the basin's ecological strain, this massive state-backed infrastructure upgrade will inevitably be accompanied by tighter environmental monitoring and stricter enforcement of industrial discharge standards.

Plastics recycling—particularly the washing phase of post-consumer polymers—is highly water-intensive.
