This strategic intervention comes as the sector prepares for the implementation of the EU’s upcoming Circular Economy Act.
The European recycling sector has faced prolonged economic strain, driven by low virgin polymer prices and high operational costs. This has dampened demand for recycled plastics, threatening the viability of local processing infrastructure. Industry bodies argue that without immediate structural support, the ambitious recycling targets set out in future EU legislation will be impossible to meet. They are advocating for stronger market incentives and measures to level the playing field against cheap imports.
For UK waste management firms and Turkish recyclers, these regulatory developments are highly consequential. Türkiye remains a primary destination for UK and European plastic scrap, and Turkish recyclers rely heavily on exporting processed resins back into the EU. Any EU policy designed to protect domestic supply chains could introduce stricter compliance requirements or import barriers. Conversely, if the EU successfully stimulates demand for recycled polymers, it could stabilise prices and create lucrative opportunities for high-quality Turkish exporters who can prove their environmental credentials.
A practical takeaway for traders and recyclers is to invest heavily in supply chain transparency and carbon accounting.
