The landscape of British waste management is preparing for a significant shift following the announcement by Exchange For Change of a new recycling infrastructure framework designed to support the UK’s upcoming Deposit Return Scheme (DRS). Scheduled for implementation in October 2027, the initiative aims to establish the collection and processing network required to handle billions of beverage containers annually.
The infrastructure rollout is a critical step in aligning the UK with successful international DRS models. By incentivising consumers to return single-use drinks containers, the scheme targets a dramatic reduction in littering and a substantial increase in recycling rates for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and aluminium.
For UK waste management companies and packaging converters, the introduction of this infrastructure represents both a challenge and an opportunity. The DRS will inevitably divert high-quality PET bottles away from traditional household kerbside collections. While this may reduce the volume of valuable polymers in municipal waste streams, it will simultaneously generate a cleaner, less contaminated stream of food-grade rPET. Packaging converters will benefit from a more reliable domestic supply of recycled content, helping them meet the requirements of the UK Plastic Packaging Tax.
For Turkish recyclers who rely on UK polymer exports, the long-term implications are dual-edged. A highly efficient UK DRS is likely to restrict the export of raw, baled PET bottles to overseas markets, as domestic reprocessors bid for the clean material. However, it also establishes a clear benchmark for feedstock purity. Turkish operators must adapt by securing alternative supply chains or investing in advanced processing capabilities to handle more complex, non-DRS municipal waste streams.
