SME climate action lags despite environmental progress, CDP study finds

A study by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) has revealed a significant gap between environmental intent and structured climate action among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). While 95% of surveyed SMEs report making tangible environmental progress, only one-fifth have established formal carbon reduction targets. This disconnect highlights a vulnerability for smaller firms operating within global supply chains.

For UK waste companies, packaging converters, and Turkish recyclers—many of whom operate as SMEs—this trend is highly consequential. As multinational consumer brands face intensifying pressure to report and reduce their Scope 3 (supply chain) emissions, they are scrutinising their upstream partners more closely. Large packaging buyers and FMCG brands will increasingly demand verified carbon data from their polymer suppliers and waste processors.

Turkish recyclers exporting recycled resins to the UK and European markets are particularly exposed to this shift. With European corporate sustainability directives setting a precedent for carbon accountability, having no clear emissions targets could soon become a commercial barrier. Conversely, recyclers who can provide transparent, low-carbon product footprints will secure a significant competitive advantage in high-value export markets.

The practical takeaway for managers in the plastics and recycling sectors is to transition from general environmental initiatives to structured carbon accounting. Companies should begin by mapping their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions using standardised frameworks like the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Establishing a baseline and setting realistic, science-based reduction targets will protect supply chain relationships and prepare businesses for upcoming regulatory disclosure mandates.
