Recycled polypropylene building materials plant opens in US

2 October 2026 · Recycling Today

US-based manufacturer Supersede has inaugurated its new production facility in Elkhart County, Indiana. The company specialises in producing engineered building materials, specifically targeting the recreational vehicle (RV) and marine industries, using recycled polypropylene (PP) as its primary feedstock. The new site aims to scale up the commercial displacement of traditional plywood with water-resistant, rot-proof plastic alternatives.

This development highlights an important trend in the circular economy: the diversion of post-industrial and post-consumer polyolefins into high-value, long-life structural applications rather than short-cycle packaging. By locating the facility in the heart of the North American RV manufacturing sector, the company has secured a direct business-to-business market for its recycled PP panels. This structural use of recycled PP locks carbon into durable goods for decades, offering a strong environmental profile compared to both virgin plastics and traditional timber products that require chemical treatments.

For UK waste management firms and Turkish polymer recyclers, this commercial expansion signals a broadening of the global end-market for recycled PP. While European packaging regulations heavily focus on food-contact rPET, the non-packaging, durable goods sector represents a massive, less-regulated sink for recycled polyolefins. Turkish compounders, who are increasingly exporting high-specification PP compounds to Europe, should note the technical viability of PP as a direct timber replacement. As UK exporters face tightening domestic plastic packaging tax thresholds, diverting lower-grade PP fractions into durable construction and industrial exports to Türkiye could optimise processing margins.

The practical takeaway for recyclers is the strategic value of market diversification. Relying solely on packaging converters for rPP demand exposes recyclers to volatile consumer-goods packaging trends. Developing high-performance, extrusion-grade PP compounds suitable for structural sheets or composite panels offers a stable, high-volume alternative market with less stringent aesthetic requirements than fast-moving consumer goods packaging.
