As global temperatures threaten to breach the 1.5°C threshold, the UNEP report stresses that the waste industry must transition rapidly from traditional disposal to circular systems. While carbon dioxide often dominates industrial decarbonisation discussions, methane has a warming potential dozens of times higher over a 20-year period. This makes municipal and industrial waste management a critical frontline for short-term climate mitigation.
