A new report by US-based organisation The Recycling Partnership has highlighted a widening gap between modern packaging design and the infrastructure built to process it. The data reveals a dramatic shift in household waste streams, characterised by a surge in multi-material cartons alongside a notable decline in traditional mixed paper. This mismatch demonstrates that consumer packaging formats are evolving far quicker than municipal sorting and reprocessing systems.

While the data originates in the US, the underlying structural challenge is identical in the UK and Europe. Brand owners are rapidly altering packaging designs to meet carbon reduction targets, often shifting to lightweight flexibles, paper-plastic hybrids, or complex barrier laminates. However, many Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) remain calibrated for legacy waste streams, such as rigid plastics and standard cardboard. This misalignment leads to higher contamination rates, lower yields of high-quality recyclate, and escalating processing costs.

For UK waste management firms and Turkish plastics recyclers, this systemic lag directly impacts feedstock quality and operational margins. As UK packaging converters adopt novel materials to navigate the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) and upcoming Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations, the resulting domestic waste stream becomes increasingly complex to sort. Turkish recyclers, who rely on imported UK polymer scrap, face the financial burden of managing higher residual waste and contamination within imported bales. To protect margins, recyclers must prepare for more complex feedstocks and factor these sorting challenges into their carbon reporting and compliance costs.
