However, many Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) remain calibrated for legacy waste streams, such as rigid plastics and standard cardboard. This misalignment leads to higher contamination rates, lower yields of high-quality recyclate, and escalating processing costs.
For UK waste management firms and Turkish plastics recyclers, this systemic lag directly impacts feedstock quality and operational margins. As UK packaging converters adopt novel materials to navigate the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) and upcoming Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations, the resulting domestic waste stream becomes increasingly complex to sort. Turkish recyclers, who rely on imported UK polymer scrap, face the financial burden of managing higher residual waste and contamination within imported bales. To protect margins, recyclers must prepare for more complex feedstocks and factor these sorting challenges into their carbon reporting and compliance costs.
