High Retail Return Discards Highlight Gaps in Reverse Logistics Circularity

A new report from reverse logistics specialist ReBound reveals that half of surveyed retailers discard, destroy, or write off between 6% and 40% of returned stock. Driven largely by rapid e-commerce growth, high operational inspection costs, and damaged protective packaging, retail returns have become a growing contributor to post-consumer commercial waste. Many returned items never re-enter the primary retail cycle because inspecting, repackaging, and re-stocking them often exceeds the residual margin of the product.

This operational bottleneck has serious implications for circular economy performance and carbon accounting. Discarded inventory generates unnecessary Scope 3 emissions through duplicate logistics steps and premature end-of-life disposal. Furthermore, returned merchandise typically arrives clad in flexible secondary packaging—such as LDPE mailers, polypropylene polybags, and expanded polystyrene inserts—which frequently ends up in energy-from-waste incinerators or landfill alongside the unfulfilled products. As European and UK legislative frameworks press for stricter adherence to the waste hierarchy, writing off functional inventory creates both financial leakage and regulatory exposure.

For UK waste management companies and polymer recyclers, this systemic inefficiency presents both a handling challenge and a scrap collection opportunity. High return volumes increase the volume of mixed commercial waste requiring processing, but early segregation at return handling hubs can yield high-quality fractions of clean flexible packaging. For packaging converters and recyclers, partnering with logistics operators provides a route to capture clear LDPE and PP films before they enter contaminated municipal waste streams. Recyclers in Türkiye monitoring imported or processed polyolefin scrap streams stand to gain if UK waste handlers establish dedicated sorting pipelines for retail logistics waste, securing cleaner feedstock for mechanical reprocessing.

Practical takeaway: Retailers and waste handlers must establish integrated material separation at return processing centres. By standardising mono-material flexible packaging and routing discarded outer wrapping directly into dedicated recycling streams, companies can lower Scope 3 carbon liabilities while capturing value from high-grade commercial scrap.
