Neela Biotech Secures £2.1m Funding for Waste-to-SAF Technology

Cambridge-based start-up Neela Biotech has secured £2.1 million in seed funding to scale its artificial intelligence-guided conversion technology, which processes waste feedstocks into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The seed round will support the commercialisation of the company’s proprietary platform, which leverages machine learning algorithms to optimise the transformation of variable waste inputs into high-specification liquid transport fuels.

Industrial Context

As global regulatory requirements enforce stricter carbon reduction targets across the aviation sector, demand for compliant SAF feedstocks is increasing rapidly. Mandates introduced by both the UK government and the European Union require fuel suppliers to integrate higher percentages of non-fossil aviation fuels into their distribution networks over the coming decade.

Although mechanical recycling remains the primary route for high-purity polymer waste, advanced biochemical and thermochemical conversion technologies are expanding the scope of usable waste materials. These processes create secondary markets for lower-grade organic and carbonaceous waste streams, diverting volumes away from traditional disposal routes such as energy-from-waste incineration and landfill.

Impact on Carbon Reporting and Compliance

For UK waste managers and international reprocessors, the commercial scale-up of waste-to-fuel refining directly influences feedstock economics and carbon accounting standards. As carbon tracking becomes a stricter regulatory requirement under UK and EU environmental policy, operators must accurately monitor the biogenic and fossil ratios within their waste volumes.

Understanding the exact composition of handled waste streams enables reprocessors to optimise sorting strategies. Directing suitable non-recyclable fractions toward SAF feedstocks allows companies to capture higher off-take value while generating verifiable carbon-reduction data required for enterprise Scope 3 emissions reporting.

Practical Takeaway

Waste management operators should audit their residual and non-recyclable waste fractions to determine biogenic composition. Establishing clear analytical data on mixed waste streams can unlock higher-value commercial off-take agreements with advanced fuel developers while bolstering climate compliance records.
