The National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) has published a comprehensive decarbonisation roadmap for PET beverage packaging. Prepared by the Eastern Research Group, the analysis outlines how the sector can significantly curb greenhouse gas emissions even amidst projected market growth. The study highlights that a combination of increased recycled content, improved collection infrastructure, and grid decarbonisation represents the most viable pathway to net-zero PET packaging.
According to the report, increasing recycled PET (rPET) usage is the single most impactful lever available to packaging producers. However, achieving deep decarbonisation also relies heavily on external factors, such as the transition of manufacturing facilities to renewable energy sources and the modernisation of waste collection systems to prevent material loss.
For UK packaging converters and Turkish recyclers, this roadmap underscores the shifting expectations of global supply chains. As the UK and EU tighten carbon reporting requirements and enforce strict circular economy mandates, packaging converters are increasingly pressured to disclose Scope 3 emissions. Turkish recyclers, who serve as vital suppliers of rPET to the British and European markets, must prepare for more rigorous carbon accounting from their buyers. Demonstrating a low-carbon manufacturing process will become as critical as price and material quality.
A key takeaway for operators is the necessity of securing traceable, low-carbon feedstocks. Recyclers should proactively audit their own energy consumption and explore on-site renewable generation. By reducing the operational emissions of the recycling process itself, Turkish exporters can offer high-value, low-carbon rPET that helps UK converters meet both recycled content thresholds and corporate net-zero targets.
