Landfill gas-to-methanol deal signals new route for waste emissions

US-based technology firm Emvolon has secured an offtake agreement with Freepoint Commodities to convert landfill gas into green methanol. Using modular, trailer-mounted equipment, the MIT spin-off aims to capture methane emissions from smaller landfill sites where building pipeline infrastructure is financially unviable. The captured gas is processed on-site into liquid methanol, a high-value chemical feedstock and alternative fuel.

This development addresses a critical environmental challenge for the waste management sector. Landfills are major contributors to global methane emissions, a greenhouse gas with a warming potential significantly higher than carbon dioxide. By deploying mobile conversion units directly to smaller waste sites, the technology prevents fugitive emissions while generating a commercial product, demonstrating a practical application of circular economy principles.

For UK waste operators and Turkish recyclers, this technology signals a shift in how waste-sector emissions are managed and valued. In the UK, landfill operators face intensifying pressure to eliminate methane leaks under national net-zero strategies and tightening environmental permits. Utilising modular conversion systems could transform a compliance liability into a revenue stream. Meanwhile, Turkish plastics recyclers and packaging converters should monitor the growth of green methanol. As the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and corporate Scope 3 reporting requirements phase in, the demand for polymers derived from captured carbon feedstocks is set to rise. Securing access to low-carbon chemical precursors will be vital for maintaining competitiveness in export markets.

The practical takeaway for waste managers is to reassess the emissions profiles of smaller or closed landfill assets. Rather than treating residual landfill gas purely as a flaring liability, operators should explore emerging modular gas-to-liquid technologies to future-proof their operations against rising carbon taxes.
