The primary objective is to evaluate operational logistics, material quality, and financial viability to build scalable recycling pathways for commercial soft plastics.

Polyethylene film represents one of the most persistent bottlenecks in secondary polymer processing. While post-industrial film is relatively clean, commercial film from retail and logistics hubs frequently suffers from contamination, inconsistent consolidation, and fragmented collection networks. As global regulatory frameworks demand higher recycled content in packaging, securing high-purity streams of flexible low-density polyethylene (LDPE) becomes critical. Demonstrating viable collection mechanisms at the commercial tier offers a potential blueprint for diverting high-volume flexible plastics from landfill or incineration into high-value mechanical recycling streams.

For UK waste management firms and Turkish reprocessors, the mechanisms being trialled in North America highlight the operational shifts required to meet tightening circularity targets. In the UK, obligations under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) are pushing businesses to capture flexible LDPE before it enters mixed waste streams. For Turkish recyclers reliant on imported or domestic film feedstock, systematic back-haul and commercial collection models offer a crucial route to obtaining lower-cost, high-clarity reprocessed LDPE pellets. Better segregation at distribution hubs reduces pre-sorting costs, lowers contamination-driven yield losses, and improves carbon reporting metrics by displacing virgin resin.

Practical Takeaway: Waste handlers and packaging converters should evaluate back-of-store and warehouse sorting practices. Establishing dedicated baling and back-haul logistics for clean commercial film creates a reliable, high-purity LDPE scrap stream, securing higher market value and lowering compliance burdens.
