Canadian Ag Plastics Scheme Achieves Record 26 Million Pound Recovery

30 Ekim 2026 · Recycling Today

Canadian agricultural stewardship organisation Cleanfarms has announced a record collection performance for 2025, recovering more than 26 million pounds (approximately 11,800 tonnes) of agricultural plastics across the country. The initiative collects empty pesticide and fertiliser containers, bulk totes, grain bags, and agricultural stretch films through dedicated collection networks serving farming communities.

Agricultural plastics—predominantly composed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films—represent one of the most challenging packaging streams to process. High levels of dirt, moisture, and chemical residue often deter reprocessors. However, Canada’s combination of voluntary participation and provincial Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations demonstrates that structured return systems can successfully divert heavily contaminated polymers away from landfill or open burning.

What it means for UK–Türkiye recyclers

For UK waste management companies and Turkish plastics reprocessors, the expansion of agricultural recovery schemes offers important lessons in circular compliance, feedstock quality, and carbon reporting. In the UK, agricultural film and rigid containers face increasing scrutiny under broader packaging and waste tracking rules. Establishing reliable collection infrastructure reassures UK waste operators that investing in advanced washing and shredding equipment is commercially viable.

For Turkish recyclers, who rely on stable flows of post-consumer and post-industrial polymers, the maturity of national collection schemes globally signals a broader trend towards better-sorted, higher-quality LDPE and HDPE waste streams. Incorporating recycled agricultural resins into construction films, refuse sacks, and industrial piping allows reprocessors to deliver verified carbon savings to clients looking to offset Scope 3 emissions.

Practical takeaway

Waste managers and reprocessors should monitor regional EPR developments for farm packaging. Building robust washing and pre-sorting infrastructure for agricultural LDPE and HDPE is becoming essential to convert contaminated streams into market-ready secondary raw materials.
