US Plastics Industry Growth Signals Continued Global Virgin Pressure

Görsel: PlasticsToday

The United States plastics industry has demonstrated continued resilience, with domestic shipments rising 0.9% to reach $533.6 billion in 2025, according to data released by the Plastics Industry Association. Chief Economist Perc Pineda highlighted the sector's "robust contribution to the economy" as its total footprint, including downstream impacts, reached $715.8 billion and supported 1.7 million jobs.

This steady expansion underscores the massive scale of North American plastics manufacturing, which remains heavily backed by abundant, low-cost shale gas feedstocks. For global markets, a robust and growing US plastics sector means a highly competitive supply of virgin polymers—particularly polyethylene and polypropylene—will continue to seek export destinations. This ongoing supply pressure keeps global virgin polymer prices relatively low, directly impacting the price competitiveness of recycled resins.

For UK waste companies and Turkish recyclers, the sheer volume of US production is a critical market driver. When US virgin polymer prices remain depressed due to high domestic output and low feedstock costs, Turkish packaging converters often find virgin resin more financially attractive than recycled alternatives. UK exporters of plastic scrap must also navigate this landscape, as low virgin prices squeeze the margins of the Turkish recycling facilities that purchase their collected materials. To remain competitive, UK and Turkish operators must focus on high-quality, food-contact grade recyclates that are insulated from virgin price fluctuations by regulatory mandates rather than purely market-driven economics.

As a practical takeaway, market players should prepare for sustained pressure on recycled polymer margins by investing in advanced sorting and washing technologies. Elevating the quality of rPET, rPP, and rHDPE is the most viable strategy to decouple from the volatile pricing of US-influenced virgin polymer markets.
