The UK’s upcoming Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) has taken a significant step forward with the appointment of five major waste management and recycling firms to build and operate its collection infrastructure. Scheme administrator Exchange for Change has selected Suez, CIRQLR, Re.Group, Bywaters, and Re-Gen as key partners. Together, these companies will develop six dedicated processing facilities across the country to handle the influx of returned beverage containers.
This infrastructure rollout is critical for establishing a robust, high-yield collection network for PET plastic bottles and aluminium cans. By establishing regional hubs, the partners aim to streamline logistics, reduce transport emissions, and ensure that collected materials are sorted to the highest standards. For UK packaging converters, a fully operational DRS represents a vital future source of food-contact approved recycled polymers, helping them meet domestic recycled content mandates and avoid the Plastic Packaging Tax.
For UK waste companies and Turkish recyclers, this development signals a structural shift in the secondary polymer market. Currently, a significant portion of UK post-consumer plastic is exported to Türkiye for processing. As the UK DRS matures, a larger volume of high-purity, food-grade PET will be retained domestically to feed the UK's own closed-loop packaging loop. Turkish recyclers, who rely on UK feedstocks, may need to prepare for a tightening supply of premium UK bottle bales, prompting a shift towards sourcing from other European markets or focusing on non-food grade technical polymers. Conversely, UK exporters will need to navigate a more regulated domestic market where clean material is highly prized at home.
