TotalEnergies forecast signals long-term shift for petrochemical feedstocks

Görsel: PlasticsToday

French energy major TotalEnergies has published its latest Energy Outlook, forecasting that global demand for petroleum products will reach a plateau during the 2030s before entering a structural decline. While liquid fuel consumption in road transport is expected to drop as electric vehicle adoption accelerates, petrochemicals will remain a primary driver of crude oil demand growth in the near term. However, the anticipated eventual peaking of total refinery throughput carries profound implications for the long-term availability, cost structure, and composition of virgin polymer feedstocks such as naphtha and ethane.

The transition in global energy infrastructure means that petrochemical feedstocks can no longer rely on endless expansion driven by cheap integrated refining operations. As traditional fuel refining shrinks, integrated petrochemical complexes will need to reconfigure operations to secure feedstocks, potentially altering the price relationship between energy products and virgin resins. In the medium to long term, tighter virgin feedstock supply or higher processing costs for fossil-derived monomers could compress the historical price spread between virgin polymers and high-quality recycled resins, fundamentally altering market economics.

For waste management firms in the UK and polymer recyclers and packaging converters in Türkiye, this shifting landscape reinforces the necessity of scaling up recycled resin capacity. UK exporters sending sorted plastic waste to Turkish reprocessors must focus on producing consistent, high-purity streams that can match the mechanical properties of virgin polymers. Meanwhile, Turkish converters relying on imported virgin polymers should hedge against future feedstock volatility by integrating secondary raw materials into their supply chains. As virgin polymer economics become increasingly linked to complex refining adjustments, stable secondary supply chains will offer crucial cost predictability and regulatory compliance under incoming circular economy directives.
