Upon excavation, the natural fibres had largely biodegraded, whereas the synthetic polyester jersey remained completely intact and undamaged.
This stark visual demonstration underscores the environmental persistence of synthetic apparel. Millions of polyester sports shirts are manufactured and discarded annually, yet the infrastructure for textile-to-textile polyester recycling remains critically underdeveloped compared to rigid PET packaging. Most synthetic garments end up in landfill or incineration, representing a massive loss of polymer resources and a significant carbon footprint.
For UK waste management firms and Turkish plastics recyclers, this issue highlights both a regulatory pressure point and a commercial opportunity. As the UK and EU move closer to implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes for textiles, the volume of collected synthetic apparel will surge. Turkish recyclers, who are already major hubs for processing European polymer waste, are well-positioned to invest in advanced mechanical and chemical recycling technologies for polyester. Bridging the gap between rigid PET bottle recycling and synthetic textile processing will be vital as supply chains demand higher recycled content.
A practical takeaway for the industry is the necessity of preparing for stricter textile disposal regulations by exploring partnerships across the supply chain.
