As one of the UK’s busiest deep-sea trading hubs, Southampton's high concentration of cruise and cargo shipping is now under intense environmental scrutiny.
While maritime transport discussions often focus on reducing greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, this study shifts the spotlight to the localized health impacts of particulate matter. The findings are expected to accelerate regulatory pressure on port authorities and shipping operators to adopt cleaner technologies, such as mandatory shore-power connections and stricter low-emission zones.
