US-based clean technology firm SiTration has partnered with mining giant BHP to deploy its novel membrane filtration technology. The project aims to recover copper and other critical metals from legacy mining wastewater, demonstrating the viability of ultra-selective extraction at scale.
Traditional separation processes in industrial recycling and waste management are often energy-intensive and rely on harsh chemical agents. SiTration's technology uses advanced silicon-based membranes to isolate specific elements at the molecular level without requiring thermal energy. While currently targeted at metals, this breakthrough represents a broader shift towards high-efficiency membrane separation. Such technologies are increasingly being adapted to clean wash-water in plastics recycling, recover chemical additives, and purify chemical recycling feedstocks.
For UK waste management firms and Turkish plastics recyclers, the development of advanced filtration technologies is highly relevant to operational costs and environmental compliance. Both jurisdictions are tightening regulations on industrial wastewater discharge and water consumption. Implementing advanced membrane systems allows recyclers to establish closed-loop water systems, drastically reducing fresh water intake and sewage discharge fees. Furthermore, as carbon reporting requirements—such as the UK's Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) framework and Türkiye's emerging emissions trading system—become more stringent, replacing thermal or chemical purification processes with low-energy membrane alternatives will be key to lowering Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.
As a practical takeaway, recyclers should closely monitor the commercialisation of molecular-level membrane filtration. When upgrading wash-line water treatment facilities, operators should assess whether advanced membranes can recover valuable process chemicals or additives, transforming wastewater treatment from a cost centre into a resource recovery process.
