Canadian clean-tech firm Char Technologies is advancing its high-temperature pyrolysis technology, partnering with heavy industry to convert woody biomass and organic waste streams, such as biosolids, into renewable natural gas (RNG) and biocarbon. The biocarbon serves as a direct replacement for metallurgical coal in steelmaking, while the RNG enters the grid, demonstrating a commercial pathway for hard-to-abate sectors.

Recyclers operate energy-intensive extrusion and washing lines. Understanding how pyrolysis-derived RNG and biocarbon can offset fossil fuel reliance, or how similar thermal processes can be applied to residual non-recyclable waste fractions, will be critical. Furthermore, as carbon accounting standards tighten, utilising verified carbon-negative materials will help recyclers defend their green credentials to packaging converters demanding low-carbon polymers.

As a practical takeaway, UK and Turkish operators should monitor cross-sector pyrolysis developments to identify local partners for synthetic gas or waste-to-energy off-take agreements, hedging against rising carbon taxes and volatile energy prices.
