PVC-to-PET Shift in Medical Packaging Signals Cleaner Streams for Recyclers

US-based thermoformer Plastic Ingenuity has developed a PET-based medical device reel to replace traditional PVC packaging, a design that reportedly diverts over 100 tonnes of PVC from the waste stream annually. The innovation, which won an Ameristar Award, will be showcased at the upcoming Pack Expo in Chicago.

Medical packaging has historically relied heavily on PVC due to its barrier properties and durability. However, PVC remains a major contaminant in commercial recycling streams, particularly for PET thermoform and bottle recycling. When PVC enters PET recycling processes, even in minute quantities, it degrades under PET processing temperatures, releasing hydrochloric acid which damages machinery and ruins the quality of the recycled flake (rPET). Replacing PVC with PET in high-volume medical applications simplifies the sorting process and increases the yield of high-quality, recyclable polymers.

For UK waste management firms and Turkish recyclers, this material substitution represents a positive step toward cleaner feedstock. As UK packaging converters face escalating pressure under the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) and extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes, substituting hard-to-recycle PVC with PET is becoming a regulatory and economic necessity. Turkish recyclers, who import significant volumes of UK and European polymer waste, stand to benefit from reduced contamination rates. Cleaner input streams mean lower processing costs, fewer batch failures, and a more reliable supply of high-purity rPET that can meet stringent European standards.

UK packaging converters should actively audit their product portfolios to identify PVC components that can be redesigned using PET or mono-materials. Simultaneously, recyclers should monitor these design shifts to adjust their optical sorting parameters, ensuring they capture these high-value PET medical streams rather than routing them to landfill or incineration.
