Packaging Sustainability Claims Face Consumer Scepticism, Study Finds

28 Temmuz 2026 · Recycling Today

A recent consumer study commissioned by global packaging manufacturer and recycler Alpla reveals that ambiguous sustainability claims on packaging are driving consumer scepticism. Unclear terminology or vague environmental promises not only influence purchasing decisions and brand loyalty but also dictate how consumers dispose of packaging after use.

When environmental claims lack clarity, consumers struggle to distinguish genuine recyclability from superficial marketing. This confusion directly affects end-of-life handling: misinformed shoppers are more likely to discard recyclable materials into general waste or introduce non-recyclable materials into recycling streams, undermining kerbside collection efficiency.

The timing of these findings coincides with heightened regulatory pressure across Europe. Authorities are increasingly targeting greenwashing through enforcement mechanisms such as the UK Competition and Markets Authority's Green Claims Code and the EU Green Claims Directive. Packaging converters and brand owners can no longer rely on unverified environmental statements without incurring significant regulatory and reputational risk.

For UK waste management firms, packaging converters, and Turkish plastic recyclers, these findings highlight a direct link between clear messaging, regulatory compliance, and material quality. Turkish manufacturers exporting rPET or polyolefin packaging into the UK and EU must ensure that any recycled content claims are backed by fully traceable, auditable supply chain documentation. Non-compliance or ambiguous labelling risks market rejection under strict destination-market standards. For UK converters and recyclers, precise labeling helps reduce contamination at sorting plants, ensuring higher yields of high-quality circular polymers.

The practical takeaway for operators across the UK–Türkiye plastics corridor is to audit all on-pack environmental statements immediately. Businesses should replace generic claims with third-party verified metrics, such as certified recycled content percentages, to guarantee regulatory compliance and protect consumer confidence.
