Operation Clean Sweep recognises leaders in industrial pellet loss prevention

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) and the American Chemistry Council (ACC) have recognised five organisations as 2026 Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) Difference Maker Award recipients at OCS CON 2026 in Houston. The awards highlight companies and individuals demonstrating operational excellence in preventing plastic pellet, flake, and powder loss throughout the resin manufacturing and distribution supply chain.

Industrial resin loss remains a primary source of secondary microplastic pollution in terrestrial and marine ecosystems. While Operation Clean Sweep originated as a voluntary stewardship program in North America, standardisation and regulatory oversight surrounding pellet containment have accelerated globally. In Europe and the UK, initiatives such as the European Union's incoming pellet loss prevention framework and the British Standard PAS 510 have transitioned pellet stewardship from a discretionary commitment into a critical compliance priority for facility operators.

For operational leads and site managers, effective containment requires combining structural hardware upgrades with systematic workplace routines. Practical steps include fitting fine-mesh catch basins over stormwater drains, deploying continuous vacuum units at pneumatically assisted transfer points, and upgrading bulk bag handling stations to eliminate spillages during discharge. Operational audits show that simple containment measures yield immediate reductions in unrecovered resin loss.

For UK packaging converters, waste management firms, and Turkish recyclers engaging in polymer cross-border trade, adherence to OCS standards is becoming a crucial commercial filter. European buyers and regulatory inspectors are tightening supply chain scrutiny around environmental management systems. Turkish reprocessors exporting recycled pellets to Europe and UK converters procuring raw materials must ensure audited zero-pellet-loss practices are in place. Aligning site protocols with OCS or PAS 510 mitigates regulatory liability, simplifies corporate carbon and environmental reporting, and ensures continued access to premium export markets.
