Ofgem allocates £16.2m for UK energy grid modernisation

The UK's energy regulator, Ofgem, has announced £16.2 million in funding for sixteen projects aimed at modernising the national electricity grid and accelerating the transition to low-carbon energy. Disbursed through the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF), the capital supports projects at various stages of development, from initial feasibility studies to advanced technology trials. The initiative focuses on improving network resilience, integrating low-carbon gases, and speeding up the delivery of electricity infrastructure.

As the UK strives to meet its net-zero targets, upgrading the grid is essential to handle the influx of renewable energy sources. Currently, grid constraints often delay the connection of new green power projects and increase balancing costs, which are ultimately passed down to industrial energy consumers.

For UK waste management companies and packaging converters, this funding represents a step toward a more stable and decarbonised power supply. Plastic recycling and extrusion are highly energy-intensive processes. Consequently, the carbon footprint of recycled polymers—specifically Scope 2 emissions—is heavily dependent on the carbon intensity of the national grid. Improvements in grid resilience and the integration of renewable energy will help UK processors lower their product carbon footprints, making domestic recycled plastics more competitive against virgin polymers.

Furthermore, as UK and European buyers face stricter sustainability reporting requirements, having access to a cleaner grid is vital for maintaining compliance and proving carbon reduction claims to brand owners.

Practical Takeaway: While these grid innovations will take time to commercialise, UK packaging converters and recyclers should continue to monitor grid decarbonisation progress. In the short term, businesses should audit their current energy contracts and consider power purchase agreements (PPAs) or on-site renewable generation to mitigate volatile network costs and secure low-carbon credentials ahead of wider infrastructure upgrades.
