Researchers have developed a low-energy chemical recycling process capable of breaking down polydicyclopentadiene (pDCPD). This highly durable thermoset polymer is widely used in heavy-duty applications, such as vehicle bumpers, agricultural machinery, and industrial equipment, where extreme toughness is required. Historically, its cross-linked structure has made it virtually impossible to recycle, meaning most end-of-life material has been destined for landfill or energy recovery.

The new method successfully cleaves the polymer network under mild conditions, allowing for the full recovery of both the raw polymer building blocks and any embedded reinforcing fibres, such as carbon or glass. By preserving the quality of these high-value fibres and the polymer matrix, the process opens up a genuine closed-loop recycling pathway for complex composite materials that previously represented a major environmental headache.

For UK waste management firms and Turkish recyclers, this breakthrough addresses a critical gap in industrial waste streams. Türkiye is a major hub for automotive manufacturing and parts processing, while the UK generates substantial volumes of end-of-life vehicle (ELV) waste. As European and UK regulations tighten around automotive recycling targets and extended producer responsibility (EPR), commercialising such technologies will help recyclers divert high-performance composites from landfill. This not only reduces scope 3 carbon emissions for industrial clients but also creates new, high-value secondary raw material streams.

While this technology is still at the laboratory stage, waste operators and technical recyclers should monitor its scaling progress. Preparing sorting lines to segregate high-performance thermosets from standard thermoplastics will be essential to capitalise on these advanced chemical recycling processes as they reach commercial viability.
