The decommissioning of ScottishPower’s Hagshaw Hill wind farm in South Lanarkshire has achieved a 99.9% combined reuse and recycling rate, setting a significant benchmark for circularity in large-scale infrastructure projects. A report by consultancy Mott MacDonald confirmed that of the materials recovered from the site’s 26 turbines and associated infrastructure, 79.5% were recycled and 20.4% were diverted for reuse.
This milestone comes at a critical juncture for the European energy transition, as the first generation of onshore wind farms reaches the end of its operational life. Historically, decommissioning has posed severe waste management challenges, particularly regarding the composite plastics and glass fibres used in turbine blades. The successful diversion of virtually all materials from landfill demonstrates that structured decommissioning frameworks can successfully reclaim high-value industrial components and technical nutrients.
For UK waste management firms and Turkish recyclers, this development underscores the shifting expectations around industrial circularity and carbon accounting. As supply chain decarbonisation becomes mandatory under UK and EU corporate sustainability reporting directives, recyclers are increasingly required to provide transparent, audited data on material recovery. Demonstrating the capacity to process complex, multi-material industrial waste streams will be a key differentiator. Furthermore, as composite recycling technologies mature to handle turbine blade materials, new secondary polymer and fibre markets will emerge, offering high-performance feedstocks for industrial packaging and construction applications.
