Greenwashing Risks Rise in Transitional Sectors as Regulatory Scrutiny Tightens

Görsel: edie

A recent study has revealed a 28% year-on-year increase in misleading environmental claims, particularly within sectors undergoing rapid low-carbon transitions. As companies rush to market their sustainability credentials, the gap between corporate pledges and verifiable actions has widened, drawing intense scrutiny from regulators and consumer watchdogs.

This surge in greenwashing allegations comes at a time when both the UK and the EU are implementing stringent anti-greenwashing frameworks. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and the EU's Green Claims Directive are actively targeting vague or unsubstantiated environmental assertions. In the plastics and packaging sectors, claims regarding "recyclability," "recycled content," and "carbon neutrality" are under the microscope. Businesses can no longer rely on broad marketing terms without robust, third-party-verified data to back them up.

For UK waste management firms and Turkish recyclers exporting polymers to the British and European markets, this trend elevates compliance and legal risks. Turkish exporters must ensure that any recycled-content claims—such as those for rPET or recycled polyolefins—are backed by rigorous chain-of-custody certifications like RecyClass or the Global Recycled Standard (GRS). UK packaging converters, meanwhile, face severe reputational and financial penalties if their imported materials fail to meet strict domestic advertising standards. Transparent, auditable data is now a commercial necessity rather than an optional extra.

To mitigate these risks, operators must conduct immediate audits of their environmental marketing materials and supply chain documentation. Companies should transition away from self-declared environmental claims and instead invest in independent, third-party certifications that provide clear traceability from waste collection to final polymer delivery.
