UK waste management firm Enva has announced a £9.5 million investment programme aimed at expanding the country’s capacity to recycle waste refrigeration units. The capital injection will fund upgrades at the company’s existing facility in Grantham, Lincolnshire, alongside the commissioning of a new processing plant in Dartford, Kent.
This infrastructure expansion comes at a critical time for the UK waste sector, which has recently grappled with severe bottlenecks in fridge recycling. Refrigerators require highly specialised processing to safely extract hazardous coolants and blowing agents while recovering valuable materials. The shortage of operational capacity has previously forced waste operators to stockpile units, increasing operational costs and compliance risks.
By boosting domestic throughput, Enva aims to stabilise the UK’s WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) recycling pipeline. Beyond metals, modern refrigeration units contain significant volumes of technical plastics, particularly High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). Improved processing efficiency at these sites is expected to yield cleaner, more consistent polymer fractions for downstream recycling.
For UK waste companies and recyclers, this development offers a dual benefit. Local waste collectors can expect reduced backlogs and more predictable gate fees as domestic capacity constraints ease. Meanwhile, polymer recyclers and traders sourcing technical plastics will benefit from a more reliable domestic supply of raw WEEE plastics, reducing reliance on volatile import markets and helping converters meet recycled content targets.
