EMV Capital acquires idled Dutch chemical recycling plant

14 Eylül 2026 · Recycling Today

London-based investment firm EMV Capital has acquired an idled chemical recycling plant in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The pyrolysis facility, which previously received backing from industry majors including LyondellBasell, is set to be reconfigured to process mixed plastic waste into chemical feedstocks.

This acquisition highlights the ongoing restructuring within the European chemical recycling sector. Pyrolysis is increasingly viewed as a necessary pathway for processing hard-to-recycle polyolefins, such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) flexible packaging, which mechanical recycling cannot easily process to food-grade standards. The takeover by a deep-tech investor suggests that despite initial commercial hurdles and high capital requirements, financial backers still see long-term value in European chemical recycling infrastructure as regulatory pressures mount.

For UK waste companies and Turkish recyclers, this development signals a tightening market for plastic waste feedstock. As chemical recycling plants in Northwest Europe scale up operations, they will increasingly compete with mechanical recyclers for consistent, sorted polyolefin fractions. Turkish recyclers exporting to the European Union must monitor these developments closely, as chemically recycled polymers will compete directly with high-quality mechanical recyclate in premium markets. Additionally, understanding the carbon accounting differences between chemical and mechanical recycling will become increasingly important for compliance with evolving EU and UK circular economy reporting standards.

The practical takeaway for waste managers and exporters is to prepare for stricter feedstock specifications. As chemical recycling projects transition from idle states to active procurement, upgrading domestic sorting capabilities will be essential to capitalise on this emerging demand stream.
