Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has acquired an 80% stake in Italian secondary aluminium producer Eco Green, marking the UAE firm’s first major entry into European recycling. Eco Green operates a secondary aluminium casting facility in Italy, processing scrap metal into usable alloys. This acquisition reflects a broader global trend where primary material producers are aggressively buying up recycling assets to lower their overall carbon intensity and secure access to finite secondary feedstocks.
For primary producers, integrating secondary recycling capacity is no longer just an environmental PR exercise; it is a core commercial strategy. As decarbonisation targets tighten globally, particularly within the European Union, the carbon footprint of raw materials is becoming a key differentiator. Secondary production requires significantly less energy than primary smelting, making recycled content a valuable tool for companies looking to mitigate carbon liabilities and meet the circular economy demands of industrial buyers.
While this transaction concerns the metals sector, it carries a vital lesson for UK and Turkish plastics recyclers and packaging converters. The structural drivers behind EGA's acquisition—namely the need to secure high-quality scrap and hedge against carbon border adjustment mechanisms (CBAM) or domestic carbon taxes—are identical to those unfolding in the polymer markets. Large petrochemical companies are increasingly acquiring mechanical and chemical recycling plants across Europe to guarantee their own supply of recycled polymers ahead of strict packaging mandates.
