Eastman Specialty PET Resin Selected for Kanebo Cosmetics Packaging

Japanese cosmetics brand Kanebo has selected Eastman’s Cristal One IM812 specialty polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin for the overcap of its latest skin lotion packaging. The material is designed to provide high-clarity, thick-walled aesthetics while maintaining compatibility with conventional PET recycling infrastructure.

Cosmetics packaging has traditionally presented significant challenges for reprocessors due to its reliance on mixed materials, styrenic polymers, acrylics, and complex closures that cannot be easily separated during mechanical sorting. By substituting non-recyclable engineering plastics with specialized PET formulations, brand owners can achieve the visual weight and clarity associated with luxury cosmetic containers without compromising circular design principles.

This shift is increasingly driven by legislative frameworks across Europe, including the UK Plastic Packaging Tax and the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which penalize non-recyclable packaging formats and enforce strict recyclability performance criteria.

Implications for UK and Turkish Recyclers

For UK waste management firms and Turkish PET reprocessors, the gradual transition of cosmetic caps and heavy-walled containers into the PET stream is a positive development. Traditional acrylic or SAN overcaps frequently end up as reject material in optical sorters or act as contaminants in wash plants, lowering overall flake yields and degrading the physical properties of recycled PET (rPET).

As packaging converters in the UK and Türkiye adapt to demand for monomaterial designs, adopting resins that fit within Resin Identification Code 1 (RIC 1) ensures that post-consumer personal care packaging can be processed alongside standard beverage bottles. Higher feedstock purity directly supports Turkish recyclers supplying food-grade and high-spec industrial rPET back into European supply chains.

Practical Takeaway

Packaging converters should review existing multi-material and styrenic cosmetic component portfolios to identify opportunities for converting to PET-compatible resins ahead of stricter European design-for-recyclability mandates.
