Dow and Amcor Partner to Scale Low-Carbon Packaging Solutions

Global packaging giant Amcor and materials science leader Dow have announced a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the adoption of low-carbon packaging. The collaboration focuses on delivering drop-in solutions that reduce Scope 3 value-chain emissions for consumer brands, bypassing the need for expensive packaging redesigns or capital expenditure on new manufacturing infrastructure.

By leveraging Dow’s bio-based and circular polymer feedstocks, the initiative seeks to provide high-performance packaging materials with a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional fossil-based plastics. This focus on "drop-in" compatibility ensures that packaging converters can run these materials on existing production lines without compromising on output or quality.

For UK packaging converters and Turkish recyclers, this partnership signals a critical shift in how sustainability is measured. While much of the historical focus has been on physical recyclability and recycled content percentages, the industry is rapidly moving towards comprehensive carbon accounting. UK converters face mounting pressure from retail clients to slash Scope 3 emissions to meet net-zero targets. At the same time, Turkish recyclers exporting to the UK and EU must recognise that recycled polymers are no longer judged solely on price and mechanical properties; their embodied carbon footprint is becoming a key differentiator.

As primary producers scale up low-carbon virgin-adjacent resins, recyclers must be ready to defend their market share. Turkish recyclers should invest in verified carbon footprint assessments for their post-consumer recycled resins, such as rPET and rLDPE, to prove their environmental credentials quantitatively.

The practical takeaway from this development is clear: carbon footprint data is becoming as vital as technical data sheets. Packaging converters and recyclers who cannot provide verified emissions data risk being sidelined as brands standardise their low-carbon procurement processes.
