Clariant launches PFAS-free processing aid for polyolefin films

Clariant has launched a new polymer processing aid (PPA) for polyolefin films that is entirely free of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The additive is designed to replace traditional fluoropolymer-based processing aids, which are facing severe regulatory scrutiny in Europe and North America, whilst maintaining the extrusion performance and optical properties required by film manufacturers.

Traditional PPAs have long relied on fluoropolymers to eliminate melt fracture, reduce die build-up, and improve throughput during film blowing. However, as regulators move to restrict PFAS due to environmental and health concerns, the packaging supply chain must transition to safer alternatives. Clariant’s new solution aims to bridge this gap, ensuring that polyolefin films remain compliant with upcoming chemical regulations without sacrificing manufacturing efficiency.

For UK packaging converters and Turkish recyclers, this development is highly significant. UK converters exporting film products to the EU must prepare for the European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) proposed restriction on wide-ranging PFAS uses. Adopting PFAS-free processing aids now safeguards export channels and avoids future compliance disruptions.

For Turkish recyclers, the move towards PFAS-free additives at the conversion stage is equally critical. As recyclers process post-consumer flexible packaging back into high-quality pellets, legacy additives can contaminate recycled resins. An industry-wide shift to PFAS-free alternatives ensures that future recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) streams remain uncontaminated, preserving their value and compliance status in high-value European markets.

The practical takeaway for operators is clear: packaging converters should actively trial PFAS-free processing aids in their current production lines. Assessing how these alternatives perform under standard extrusion conditions will allow companies to transition smoothly before legislative bans mandate the change.
