Cheerios Introduces Resealable Zipper Liners in Cereal Packaging

Major food brand General Mills has updated its Cheerios cereal packaging by integrating Ziploc press-to-close zipper seals into the internal plastic liners of its traditional cardboard boxes. The modification aims to improve product freshness and consumer convenience, allowing the inner flexible bag to be resealed repeatedly after opening.

While functional additions like zip closures enhance usability and help prevent food waste, they present technical considerations for flexible packaging converters and plastic recyclers. Inner liners for dry food products typically rely on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) or multi-layer film structures to provide moisture barriers. Integrating press-to-close tracks introduces additional polymer mass—often requiring polypropylene (PP) or specialized PE resins for the male and female zip profiles—which can alter the melt flow index and density of the post-consumer film stream.

For UK waste management companies collecting post-consumer flexible plastics and Turkish reprocessors converting film scrap into high-value recycled pellets, design modifications in high-volume food packaging carry practical consequences. If zipper closures utilise incompatible polymers relative to the main film body, the resulting recycled resin can develop gels or inclusions during re-extrusion. UK exporters preparing film waste for shipment to Türkiye must remain attentive to contamination risks, as Turkish recyclers face increasingly stringent quality standards and carbon reporting expectations for imported plastic scrap.

Practical Takeaway: Packaging converters and brand owners incorporating resealable features into flexible liners should ensure zipper profiles match the primary substrate resin—preferably mono-material LDPE—to preserve recyclability within existing flexible film reprocessing streams.
