California’s beverage container recycling programme has marked its 40th anniversary, providing long-term data on the efficacy of deposit return schemes (DRS). According to CalRecycle, the state's recycling regulator, the initiative successfully collected 20.3 billion beverage containers in 2025 alone, bringing the cumulative total to nearly 550 billion containers since its inception in the 1980s.
The longevity of the Californian system offers a blueprint for how legislative frameworks can drive circular economy goals over decades. By placing a redeemable deposit on beverage containers, the state has maintained high collection rates, diverting millions of tonnes of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), aluminium, and glass from landfills into high-value reprocessing streams.
For UK waste management companies and packaging converters, this milestone is highly instructive. The UK has faced repeated delays in implementing its own unified DRS, currently scheduled for 2027. The Californian experience demonstrates that whilst initial setup and regulatory alignment require significant capital, the long-term result is a highly predictable, clean stream of post-consumer material. This reduces contamination, which remains a primary headache for UK materials recovery facilities (MRFs).
For Turkish recyclers, who import significant volumes of European and UK plastic waste, the global shift towards DRS is equally critical. As more jurisdictions adopt deposit schemes, the quality of available baled PET improves. High-quality rPET feedstock is essential for Turkish processors aiming to meet strict European food-contact standards. Understanding the long-term yield of mature schemes like California's helps recyclers project future feedstock purity and availability.
