Managing battery fire risks in waste streams: Lessons from US initiatives

An Iowa landfill has introduced a dedicated battery disposal programme designed to mitigate the escalating risk of fires at waste and recycling facilities. The initiative offers residents free disposal of household batteries, aiming to intercept these hazardous materials before they enter the general waste stream where compaction and sorting processes can easily trigger thermal runaway.

While this specific scheme is localised to the United States, the underlying challenge of lithium-ion battery contamination is a critical operational hazard globally. For waste management firms and material recovery facilities (MRFs), the presence of batteries in co-mingled recycling streams represents a severe threat to personnel safety, infrastructure, and business continuity.

For UK waste companies and Turkish plastics recyclers, the issue of battery-induced fires is an increasingly costly problem. In the UK, the Environmental Services Association (ESA) has frequently highlighted that lithium-ion batteries are responsible for a significant proportion of fires in waste sites, driving up insurance premiums and causing severe disruption to feedstock supply chains. For Turkish recyclers importing municipal or commercial plastic waste from the UK and Europe, battery contamination in baled plastics poses a double risk: it threatens processing machinery and increases the likelihood of transit fires during maritime or road transport.

Ensuring clean, battery-free input streams is therefore essential for maintaining high-quality polymer output and safeguarding recycling facilities. As regulatory frameworks around Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and WEEE collections tighten across Europe, operators must implement stricter inbound inspection protocols.

The practical takeaway from these international containment efforts is that relying on consumer sorting at the kerbside is insufficient. UK waste suppliers and Turkish processors must invest in advanced automated sorting technologies, such as optical sorters or X-ray detection, alongside robust supplier-compliance audits, to intercept battery hazards before they reach the shredder.
