Americas smartphone study highlights wider circular economy lessons

A new study backed by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation has highlighted the significant untapped economic and environmental potential of enhancing collection, reuse, and recycling systems for smartphones across three countries in the Americas.

Although focused on consumer electronics in the Western Hemisphere, the findings underscore a global challenge: the slow adoption of robust circular systems for complex, multi-material products. Smartphones contain high-value technical plastics, such as polycarbonate and ABS, which are frequently lost to landfill or incineration due to inadequate collection infrastructure and design barriers.

For UK waste management firms and Turkish recyclers, the insights from this study are highly applicable to the evolving regulatory landscape in Europe. As the UK and EU tighten Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes and introduce stricter carbon reporting requirements, the regulatory focus is expanding from simple packaging plastics to technical polymers found in durable goods. Turkish recyclers, who process technical plastic scrap, must prepare for stricter compliance and supply chain audits. Aligning with these circular principles will help recyclers lower their Scope 3 emissions and demonstrate carbon savings to brand owners. Furthermore, as cross-border trade regulations become more stringent, demonstrating a clear chain of custody for recycled technical polymers will become a key competitive advantage.

One practical takeaway for recyclers is to actively assess their capability to process engineering plastics. Investing in advanced optical sorting technology now will prepare facilities for the inevitable influx of complex, post-consumer technical plastic streams driven by stricter global eco-design mandates.
