AI-driven landfill monitoring launched to target methane emissions

US-based technology firm Loci Controls has introduced an artificial intelligence-assisted tool designed to optimise landfill gas collection and monitor emissions. By training its model on over a decade of real-time wellhead monitoring data, the company aims to provide landfill operators with predictive insights to mitigate methane leaks and maximise energy recovery.

The system automates the analysis of complex variables, such as barometric pressure and gas composition, which traditionally required manual adjustments by field technicians. By streamlining this process, the technology helps operators maintain optimal vacuum pressure at wellheads, preventing both the escape of potent greenhouse gases and the over-extraction of air, which can risk underground landfill fires.

For UK waste management companies, this advancement highlights a broader shift towards data-driven decarbonisation. As the UK government continues to reform its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and tighten municipal waste policies, landfill operators face mounting pressure to minimise their environmental footprint. Implementing advanced monitoring systems will be critical for compliance as regulatory scrutiny on fugitive methane emissions intensifies.

For Turkish recyclers and packaging converters exporting to the European and British markets, these developments are also highly relevant. As supply chain carbon accounting becomes more rigorous under frameworks like the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and evolving Scope 3 reporting standards, the carbon intensity of waste management processes is under the microscope. Demonstrating that residual waste is managed with minimal atmospheric impact supports the overall sustainability credentials of recycled polymers.

A key practical takeaway for waste sector stakeholders is that emissions monitoring is rapidly transitioning from a periodic compliance exercise to a continuous, automated process. Companies should audit their current monitoring capabilities and consider how integrating predictive analytics could safeguard against future regulatory penalties while improving operational efficiency.
