The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure is projected to trigger a dramatic surge in electronic waste over the next quarter-century. According to a report by the non-profit Basel Action Network (BAN), the global drive to establish thousands of high-capacity data centres will triple annual e-waste volumes within 25 years. This projected surge of discarded hardware presents severe environmental risks due to the presence of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, alongside valuable but difficult-to-recover materials.

The report highlights a critical policy gap: there is currently no coordinated global strategy to manage the decommissioning of these massive computing facilities. Beyond the valuable precious metals, server infrastructure contains substantial volumes of technical engineering plastics, many of which are treated with brominated flame retardants (BFRs).

For UK waste management companies and Turkish recyclers, this projected influx of complex electronic waste underscores a dual challenge of compliance and technical capacity. As transboundary waste shipment regulations tighten—particularly under the Basel Convention and post-Brexit UK export controls—shipping complex, plastic-heavy e-waste across borders will face intense scrutiny. Turkish recyclers, who are key partners for UK waste exports, must prepare for stricter sorting requirements. Separating hazardous flame-retardant plastics from recyclable polymers like ABS and polycarbonate will be critical to avoiding costly customs rejections and ensuring compliance with both Turkish import bans on hazardous waste and European circular economy standards.

A practical takeaway for operators is the urgent need to invest in advanced sensor-based sorting technologies, such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF), to reliably detect and isolate halogenated plastics. As regulatory bodies crack down on persistent organic pollutants, recyclers who can guarantee clean, BFR-free polymer streams from technical waste will secure a significant market advantage.
