Rather than simply replacing manual sorting on conveyor belts, AI-powered optical and robotic systems are now capable of identifying specific packaging types, polymer grades, and food-contact versus non-food-contact plastics. This granular tracking generates real-time data on material composition, allowing materials recovery facilities (MRFs) to pinpoint exactly where valuable polymers are being lost to residual waste streams.
For UK waste companies and Turkish recyclers, these technological advancements carry significant commercial and regulatory implications. In the UK, as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the Plastic Packaging Tax demand greater transparency, AI-driven data provides the audit trails needed to verify recycling claims and material destinations. For Turkish recyclers relying on imported UK feedstocks, the adoption of AI sorting in British facilities promises a marked reduction in contamination. Cleaner, better-sorted bales of PET, HDPE, and PP arriving at Turkish ports will lower processing costs, minimise reject rates, and ensure compliance with Türkiye’s strict environmental import controls.
